why does my 1992 ranger get poor gas mileage?

I have a 1992 ford ranger custom, automatic tranny, 2wd, 4.0l v6, and no cruise control. I replaced the plugs and wires, installed an electric fan and had a k&n filter. Even w/ the k&n panel filter my average was about 17.86 mpg( the k&n only improved the avg by 1mpg so I got my $50 back), and I only romp on it only when I need to pass other than that Im light on the gas. I seafoamed it and put ” engine restore 6cyl in the oil” . It dosnt have a rough idle. It has 165K miles. Im gonna be honest w/ you whenever I add those octane boosters it actually runs rough.

To be honest with you, your mileage is probably not going to get much better due to the following points
1- You have a 4.0l V6 which even in newer rangers still doesnt get that much better mileage.
2- Its an automatic. Automatic transmissions have historically always acheived lower fuel mileage than manual transmission due to being less efficient in power transfer.
3- It has 165,000 miles on it. It has alot of wear on it and wont be as efficient as it used to be.

The best thing you could do to help would be to replace the fuel injectors. The older the fuel injectors get the higher the chance that they will start to slowly leak fuel while the engine is running which can cause a loss in mileage. The only way to tell for sure is to replace them.
I wouldn’t add octane boosters to your fuel. Your truck was designed to run on 87 octane and adding octane boosters will do nothing to help you. Your basically throwing money away when you use them and as you already found out it can actually cause problems when you use them. Leave the higher octane to the vehicles made for it.
