Why does my wide screen TV still show the black bars on the top and bottom of a wide screen movie?

I have a 60″ pioneer 1080p plasma brand new last November with a blu-ray player also pioneer. So it shouldn’t be a hardware issue. I thought the whole idea of a wide screen tv was to eliminate the black bars on the top and bottom during a widescreen movie. Even the most recent movies do this. Is there something I need to change on my tv or dvd player?

First of all, I am SUPER jealous!

When you watch a widescreen movie, it is not formatted to fit the screen, even if it’s a widescreen tv. The purpose of a widescreen tv is not to eliminate the black bars, but to get the bigger (wider) picture.

Unfortunatley, you can’t get ride of the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, even if you have a widescreen tv.
