Yup, CD-ROM.

They have a two wire jack that plugs into the back of the CD-ROM and goes directly to the sound card (or motherboard, if the sound card is built into the motherboard itself by using an integrated chip set). The audio is transferred directly from the CD-ROM to the sound card, eliminating the need to software-decode the audio before processing it in the sound card. This was needed back when when CD-ROMs were new, and the processors were very, very slow. Some systems just didn’t have enough horsepower to process the digital audio and run other apps at the same time . With the direct connection, you could off-load that processing to the sound card, and listen to a CD while working on a document.

Note that this connection was only meant for audio CD’s, not computer discs or DVD’s,
